What unmanaged really means
With an unmanaged VPS, the provider operates the physical infrastructure and virtualization layer while you manage the guest operating system and applications. That usually includes SSH security, updates, web-server configuration, backups, monitoring, and incident response.
What managed can mean
Managed hosting is not a universal checklist. One provider may manage only the operating system, while another supports the web stack or WordPress. Ask for a written scope covering updates, malware response, backups, restore testing, migrations, and application troubleshooting.
A better cost comparison
Add administrator time, monitoring, backup storage, security tools, and the expected cost of downtime to the server fee. For a freelancer who already automates these tasks, unmanaged compute may be efficient. For a store without technical staff, managed hosting can be less expensive overall.
